When Should Orthotics Be Replaced?
Orthotics are prescription medical devices worn on the inside of shoes. They help patients correct foot abnormalities that can lead to foot aches, leg pain, and pain in the hips and back.
Broken or old orthotics could affect your gait and overall health more than you realize. While there is no strict timeline for when to replace your orthotics, there are a few key factors to consider when gauging whether it might be time to acquire new ones. Here are a few questions to help you decide.
1. Has your pain returned?
If the pain you were experiencing before using your orthotics returns, it may be time to replace them. This is a sign that your orthotics are no longer providing the support you need. If you have recently noticed the development of new growths, such as calluses or corns, indicates that your orthotics are not effectively treating your feet anymore.
2. Are you changing your shoes?
As a general rule, we often recommend replacing your orthotics when you replace your shoes. Changes in footwear will impact how it fits and functions. The amount of time and stress it takes to wear down a shoe is also likely to impact your orthotics. In most cases, orthotics should be replaced every two to three years, but this also depends on how often you use them.
3. Are they damaged or worn out?
It is a good idea to take your insoles out periodically to check for signs of erosion and/or damage. Inserts that appear thin or have permanently indented areas mean your orthotics are unable to fulfill their purpose fully.
4. Have you gone through any lifestyle changes recently?
Any major lifestyle or body changes—including a recent injury, pregnancy, or new activity—may change the shape of your foot and necessitate a new orthotic prescription.
Ultimately, orthotics are not meant to last forever and will require replacing at some point.
