Here are the two most common causes we see in clinic 👇 As a podiatrist, the majority of heel pain cases come down to: 1️⃣ Tight calf muscles When your calves are tight, they increase tension through the Achilles tendon and into the plantar fascia. That constant pull stresses the heel attachment — which is why it’s often worse when you first get out of bed or after sitting. 2️⃣ Not enough foot support Flat, unsupportive shoes (or worn-out work boots and runners) allow excessive pronation and arch collapse. That overloads the plantar fascia and heel structures, leading to ongoing irritation and inflammation. ⸻ What we do in the clinic: ✔️ Add a supportive orthotic insole This helps control excessive movement, improve alignment, and reduce strain on the heel. ✔️ Recommend proper footwear Supportive shoes or work boots help stabilise the foot so it can function efficiently and “rest” across the day instead of overworking. ✔️ Start calf stretching immediately Reducing calf tightness lowers tension through the heel and improves long-term outcomes.
