What Are Heel Spurs and What Causes Them?
Heel spurs are small bony growths that form on the underside or back of the heel bone (calcaneus). While an X-ray might make a heel spur look like a sharp spike, it actually extends across the width of the heel bone from inside to outside, forming a ledge of bone.

How Traction Triggers Bony Growth
Heel spurs develop when there is excessive traction where a ligament or tendon attaches to the bone. On the bottom of the foot, repetitive tension from the plantar fascia can lead to a plantar heel spur. At the back of the heel, strain from the Achilles tendon can cause a posterior spur. Over time, excessive tension irritates the periosteum—the outer covering of the bone—which responds by laying down extra bone tissue.
Common Contributing Factors
Several everyday factors can increase strain on the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon. Excessive foot pronation, tight or weak calf muscles, carrying extra body weight, and wearing poorly fitted or unsupportive shoes all contribute to higher traction forces at the heel.
