Understanding the Supinated Foot Type and How It Affects Gait
A supinated foot type—sometimes called an underpronating or inverted foot—occurs when the foot rolls outward rather than inward during movement.
While less common than overpronation, standing or walking on a supinating foot places disproportionate pressure on the outer edge of the foot, which can lead to discomfort over time.
How a Supinated Foot Behaves Standing and Walking
When standing, a supinated foot appears tilted outward, with the heel bone angled away from the centre line of the lower leg. Most of your body weight is borne by the lateral, or outer, border of the foot. During walking, as the heel strikes the ground, the foot remains rolled outward throughout the entire contact phase of the gait cycle rather than flexing inward to absorb shock naturally.

Because a supinating foot does not naturally roll inward to dissipate ground impact, it can transfer extra force up through the ankles, shins, and knees.
